Healthy Vein Hints
There are several risk factors for varicose veins. These are, in no particular order:
- Family history of varicose veins
- Pregnancy
- Female gender
- Overweight
- Occupation
- Lack of exercise
- Previous history of blood clots
Ways to Decrease Your Risk for Varicose or Spider Veins
- Exercise regularly, walking 30 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week
- Avoid strenuous weight lifting with your legs
- Control your body weight
- Elevate your legs as much as possible when sitting
- Avoid standing in one position for a long period of time
- Wear compression hose or snug fitting stockings if you are going to be on your feet all day
- If you become pregnant, wear compression hose all day
- Dr. Stephanian recommends knee high compression hose, but some people prefer thigh high hose. The length of compression hose to wear depends on your comfort level.
- Try to avoid crossing your legs, kneeling or squatting for long periods of time.
