Steps in the Treatment of Varicose Veins
After your initial consultation and evaluation, Dr. Stephanian will schedule you for an ultrasound test of your leg veins. This is a non-invasive test that examines the leg veins to determine the underlying cause for your varicose vein problem. Specifically, we are looking for reflux (vein valves that are not working properly and leaking), or evidence for inflammation or old blood clots. Once the ultrasound test has been performed, a treatment plan specific for your clinical situation can be recommended.

If the Ultrasound test does not demonstrate any abnormalities:
The next step may be microphlebectomy (removal of the veins with tiny incisions under local anesthesia), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (injection of the veins under ultrasound guidance), or sclerotherapy (injection of the veins without ultrasound guidance). The decision depends on the severity and position of the varicose veins. Dr. Stephanian will discuss his recommendations with you after reviewing the ultrasound test.
If the Ultrasound test shows a leaking valve (reflux):
The options at this point are to perform an endovenous treatment of the varicose vein (EVLT), surgical vein stripping (removal of the veins in surgery), microphlebectomy (removal of the veins with tiny incisions under local anesthesia), or continued observation without intervention. The decision again depends on the severity of the reflux, and the position and severity of the varicose veins. Dr. Stephanian will discuss his recommendation with you after reviewing the ultrasound test.
